Seriously local eggs - get your own backyard chickens

From my mailbox to you:

“Hi Chicken Lovers! Green’s Feed is having their Chick Day on Saturday March 7. They have ordered 1200 chicks. You get five free chicks with each bag of starter feed. You can choose from different breeds and some of the breeds will be sexed. You can also get mixed runs. Get there early!”

Green's Feed is located at 4701 N. Virginia in Reno. Phone is 323-1502.

I'm a little behind the curve here, but is it legal to have backyard chickens in your typical residential neighborhood in Reno or Sparks? I'm assuming homeowner's associations are uniformly against keeping backyard birds.

Still, a handful of hens are quieter than most dogs and useful for weed and pest control. And tasty eggs.

Hi Anonymous,

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you on this one. Legal issues surrounding food are always tricky so I don't want to answer hastily. As it turns out soon after you posted this question Melody Hefner from the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension wrote a Reno Gazette Journal article that included a brief description of the Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County laws regarding chickens. I'll post an excerpt from the article. For the full article you can either purchase it online from the RGJ archives or get it free online from the Washoe County Library databases @ www.washoe.lib.nv.us. Click on Research Databases, then News and Current Events, then click on the RGJ link in the America's Newspapers paragraph. Keyword search "raising chickens".

Thanks for asking!
Shelley

Is there going to be another "Chick Day" in 2010? I would love to add a few more little chicks to the bunch we are getting late March/early April.

Hi Takari,

Are you looking for a group of like-minded people to go in on a chick order with? If so, let me know and I'll put you in contact with some who might be interested. If I've completely misunderstood what you're asking, let me know.
